About

Ulysses Grant was no obscure boy from an anonymous village. Black and white, male and female, northerners and southerners gathered in Ulysses’ neighborhood with a fierce commitment to slavery’s demise. Decades before his birth, those monitoring the new nation’s heartbeat diagnosed slavery as fatal. Ulysses Underground uncovers their deep-laid plan for freedom, later called the Underground Railroad.

Ulysses Underground also reveals ties to the Founding Fathers and to the Grant family. The challenge inundating Ulysses’ childhood and adolescence was how to end slavery without severing the United States. G. L. Corum’s ground-breaking research illuminates the 70-year antebellum effort to allow those with darker skin the full benefits of a democracy. Corum explores the conflict between those pushing overtly and covertly to end slavery, as well as Ulysses’ place in the crux of it.

Using dozens of letters, sixty-five illustrations, and thirteen maps, Ulysses Underground: The Unexplored Roots of U.S. Grant & the Underground Railroad unfurls America’s best history.
